The NBA, or National Basketball Association, is a professional basketball league in North America composed of 30 teams (29 in the United States and 1 in Canada). Founded in New York City on June 6, 1946, as the Basketball Association of America (BAA), it later merged with the National Basketball League (NBL) in 1949 to become the NBA. The league is widely considered one of the premier basketball leagues globally and features some of the best basketball players from around the world. The NBA season typically runs from October to April, followed by a postseason playoff tournament culminating in the NBA Finals in June, where the two conference champions compete for the championship title. The NBA has a significant influence on basketball culture, international sports, and sports media, making it a prominent organization in the world of professional sports.
