Sumo Wrestling

Sumo wrestling is a traditional Japanese form of competitive wrestling that features two contestants, known as rikishi, who face off in a circular ring called a dohyo. The primary objective is to force the opponent out of the ring or to make any part of their body, except the soles of their feet, touch the ground. Matches can involve a variety of techniques, including pushes, shoves, and grappling. Sumo is deeply rooted in Japanese culture and is accompanied by numerous rituals and ceremonies, reflecting its historical significance and the spiritual elements associated with it. Wrestlers are ranked within a hierarchical system based on their performance, and tournaments are held regularly, with the most prestigious being the six annual tournaments known as honbasho. Sumo is not just a sport but also a cultural performance that embodies discipline, strength, and respect.
